Your Inner Stars

This is one of about nine songs that I wrote for my wife in the course of our marriage (so far). In this particular song I was lamenting the distance that sometimes separates people who get married or remain in long relationships. After an initial "honeymoon," we begin to realize we're living with a real person and not an idealized lover. That can be scary, and we may retreat to protect ourselves. This was a plea against that kind of thing.
Your Inner Stars

I love you so, but in order to show it
I have to get to a place where I can be free
So unafraid that you will take advantage of me

You've heard my words, you already know them
But you're afraid love like I am and can't let me in,
So on we go, and neither you and I can say it

Open up your inner stars to me
Let me read the novel of your mind
Let me weave a tapestry of strands
You and I could walk among the sands
We could wrap our passions up in starlight now
Open up your eyes and show me how

You took a chance, your heart has been broken
So many times, why should I be anything new?
But all I do is try to show you how I'm different.

CHORUS

(How) can I make you see
You belong to me?
Where's the match that lights the candle burning in your heart?
