Orchestral Music: Themes Off A Variation

(Adam Cole)
July 22, 2008
Adam Cole
This is my first orchestral piece. Instead of the usual practice of writing Variations on a Theme, I've derived nine themes off of a Variation by Brahms (no. 4, op. 23) The original theme is by Robert Schumann. The piece begins with the Brahms variation, goes through the 9 themes, and ends with Schumann's original theme (which would be sung in a real performance by an alto soloist). The words are given above.
Score and parts are available from the composer.
To Schumann, Berceuse

Sleep when the angels come
Sleep when your days are done
Rest forever my beloved

No more the anguished dreams
All now is what it seems
Safe from harm this weary day.

Dawn is far away
Sleep is here to stay
Rest now in your bed everafter.

All is deathly still
Sang the whiporwill
Rest now for your time everafter.
